About Jamie's Word Art

Jamie's Word Art

I create hand-finished studio pieces that weave the rustic poetry of John Clare into traditional, deeply textured British wildlife linocuts.

Jamie Poole Arts: Sensing the Land

Welcome to my garden studio, located in the heart of the historic Nene Valley in Northamptonshire. My creative practice is a dedicated exploration of the British landscape, focusing on the sensory textures, wildlife, and deep structural patterns of our native habitats. Moving between the quiet sanctuary of the carving bench and active, hands-on environmental stewardship as Chairman of our local community garden, my artwork is an ongoing attempt to capture those fleeting, quiet moments where time completely disappears.

The Craft Lineage and Mediums

My work relies on a unique dialogue between traditional artisan heritage and modern design. Having spent over thirty years integrating literature with visual art, my current practice is centered on a multi-layered hybrid method. Every piece begins as a loose, text-heavy watercolor and paper collage built within digital software, capturing the chaotic energy of the open fields. This design is printed using archival pigments onto premium, heavy-weight paper before the true physical labor begins.

Using professional steel tools, I hand-carved the bold, architectural line work of each specimen into a relief linoleum block, striking it directly over the flattened background layout. To ensure a true premium quality, I return to each individual sheet by hand, reactivating the surface with fine graphite pencils and selective ink washes. This workmanship of risk means every piece functions as a finite, variable multiple original.

Inspirations and Wildlife Specimens

My inspiration is anchored in the historic lineage of British modern naturalists and printmakers, drawing heavily on the bold outlines of Edward Bawden and the sophisticated simplicity of Eric Ravilious. Visually, my work looks to the minute particulars of our countryside—the scrowled bark of an ancient oak, the hidden path of a mammal through a hedgerow, or the light breaking across Irthlingborough Meadows.

This biocultural project maps our native countryside through a series of wildlife collections based on three distinct realms: The Wood, The Wave, and The Wing. From the proud silhouette of the hen harrier drifting over scarped hills to the quiet presence of a mute swan nestled in the rushes, each design aims to breathe life back into the landscape. By embedding fragments of regional poetry, such as the rustic verses of John Clare and the observations of Gilbert White, directly into the animal's plumage, the printed word literally becomes the pigment of nature.

Original Specimens for Your Home

Within my shop, you will discover a curated collection of hand-finished studio pieces, original linocut multiples, and finely detailed art cards designed to bring a window of countryside stillness into your living space. Every print is individually signed, titled, and cataloged in pencil to verify original hand authorship. Thank you for supporting independent, physical printmaking and joining a lineage of conscious connection to our shared natural heritage.
