When I visited Whitesands Beach in Pembrokeshire I was fascinated by the geology of the beach and the different layers of rocks in the cliffs surrounding the beach, so took many photos. I prefer to work from photographs because the light was changing so quickly as clouds quickly crossed the sky causing colours to change rapidly from one minute to the next. What can look like a perfect scene, an instant later can look very nondescript a moment later with the passing of a cloud. Photographs are therefore essential to my work as I work very slowly and methodically, taking my time over every detail. So this picture, like so much of my work took over a week of continuous drawing.
