Silenced is a richly layered mixed-media portrait of an original non-binary fantasy character, imagined somewhere between a modern fantasy book cover and a dark fairytale.
Against a stormy wash of indigo, violet and rose, the figure is framed by a distressed golden halo while strange, watchful vines curl around their throat. A black moth spreads its wings below, amongst moons, eyes, locks and jewel-bright details.
Beautiful at first glance and increasingly unsettling the longer you look, Silenced explores the tension between ornament and restraint.
MEANING & SYMBOLISM
A chain closes around the figure's throat. At its centre, a flaming violet jewel holds the voice and agency that have been forced inward, while their drained lips suggest words fading through disuse.
The watchful plant restrains them and speaks in their place. A waning moon and setting sun represent dwindling hope, while eclipses on the moth's wings symbolise the self and its agency becoming obscured. Locks evoke captivity and the unsettling idea that somebody else holds the key. Even the harness is ambiguous: chosen adornment, but also an echo of restraint.
At the heart of Silenced is not somebody without a voice. It is still there, burning fiercely.
