Description

The 'Silkie Shawl' Knitting Kit Skill Level required: Intermediate to Experienced Colourway: Silver Birch Yarn Yardage required to make the shawl: 332 yards (each skein is labelled with the yardage amount). Dimensions of completed blocked shawl: 56" 142cm long 15.5" 40cm depth NB: DISCLAIMER No matter what your skill level, please, please, PLEASE knit a test square first! Knitting with pure silk yarn is very different to knitting with wool. Unlike wool, silk has no elasticity so you will need to knit a lot looser than you may be used to. I have allowed enough yardage in the skeins for you to knit the test square. Knit a beautiful shawl from 100% pure Silk Yarn, that has been hand dyed and hand spun. The shawl incorporates Japanese seed beads to add that special sparkle. The 'Silkie Shawl' would look lovely with a bridesmaids dress or if you contact me I can discuss spinning a natural ( white ) kit for knitting a bridal shawl. The kit would make an ideal gift for experienced Knitters. It takes approximately 4 to 5 weeks to spin enough Silk Yarn to produce a kit, so if you want to commission a kit for a bridal shawl or multiples of a particular colour for bridesmaids please contact me. The Knitting designer, Jem Arrowsmith, from Olive Tree Knits, designed an exclusive shawl pattern for my hand spun silk yarn. The name 'Silkie Shawl' reflects my Celtic heritage, as it has it's roots in the Celtic legend of the Selkies, which has alternative spellings of Silkies, Selchies or Roane. A Silkie is a mythical sea-maiden who sheds her seal skin on land and keeps her cloak of fur safe for when she returns to the sea. Wrap yourself in your own 'Silkie Shawl' and enter an enchanted tale of Celtic mythology.

Please keep out of the reach of children as the kit contains small items such as; tiny seed beads, sharp items; circular knitting needles, a metal crochet hook and a complimentary set of stitch markers and wash sample. Contains Silk yarn.

  • I'm a kumihimo artist and have been wanting to move into working with silk for a while, I just hadn't found a seller who ticked all the boxes - until I found Bernie! Firstly, the silk collected Monet's Garden is indescribably beautiful. The colours are vibrant, the silk is beautifully soft but with a really amazing sheen and I can't wait to start working with it. But, moreover, Bernie was approachable, friendly, extremely knowledgeable - both about her own process and materials as well as understand how I'll be working with her thread as a braider. By the time I placed my order, she felt like an old friend. And then, today, this lovely packet arrives in the post, in impressively quick time, and every part of unwrapping it was lovely. Wrapped in lovely tissue paper, sealed with bespoke stickers, little gifts of special tea and chocolate and scented lovely things all added to the feeling that I was handling something special. I am super-eager to both start working with this amazing silk that Bernie span herself and to order from her lovely shop again. This order was pure joy at every turn, from start to finish - thank you so much, Bernie x
