About The Swan and the Stone

The Swan and the Stone

Hand‑sculpted jewellery and gifts for lovers of nature, folk and myth

Hi, I'm Steve. Down a quiet lane in rural Essex, where Swan Street meets Potter Street and the fields roll toward Suffolk, I sculpt tiny stories out of clay and imagination.

I’ve always believed that real magic happens where craft meets creativity. For more than fifteen years I sculpted for performance - armour, masks, and creatures for independent film, fantasy TV, brands, bands, and collectors. Those years trained my eye and taught me the patience needed for fine detail. As a lifelong lover of stories, I’ve always felt that every imagined being deserves to feel alive.

After losing several close family members and friends in a short space of time, my wife and I brought forward our retirement dream of moving to the countryside. I didn’t expect that trading the commuter belt for sunken lanes and ancient woods would change my work so deeply. Walking the fields, watching wrens splash in the pond, seeing my wife’s delight at a hare at dusk - these moments quietly settled into my subconscious.

In early 2026, a kind lady from a neighbouring village gifted my wife a huge bag of walnuts. I was sad to see the beautiful shells thrown away, so I wondered whether I could sculpt something tiny to live inside one. My wife’s reaction to the dormouse necklace I made for her was unforgettable. I hadn’t planned a collection. I simply kept making creatures until I realised they belonged together.

That is the first chapter for the swan & the stone: miniature guardians of British wildlife. I hand‑sculpt and individually cast each piece in my home studio. Each one is a reminder of how easily our smallest neighbours can vanish and how much beauty hides in plain sight.

But my maker story began even earlier. I’ve always been drawn to fantasy, myth, and folklore and read works by authors like Tolkien since a child. Then, two weeks before our move in February 2025, I unexpectedly began a dream contract on Amazon Prime's Lord of the Rings series, The Rings of Power. That love and experience runs through my work, and I have plans for new ranges that will honour that in time.

Looking back, I can see that everything I make, and will make, explores three themes:

* Earth - the tangible wild world around us: hares and dormice, songbirds and owls, and the patient trees that shelter them.

* Spirit - the emotions, symbols, and quiet transformations that give stories their meaning.

* Myth - the folklore and legendary companions that have walked our landscapes for centuries.

For me, making is not about mass production but devotion to detail and time. I believe art can slow the world a little. As a fan of practical film effects, I’ve always felt that holding something tactile reawakens attention. More than ornaments, these creations are invitations to pause.

To honour my late father’s love of nature, I donate ten percent of profits from each piece to registered British wildlife conservation charities, helping to protect the flora and fauna that inspire my work.

Everything I make begins with craft and creativity working together. To me, that’s the truest form of magic: creating something meaningful from seemingly nothing. I hope each piece reaches your hands with the same sense of wonder that shaped mine.

Best regards
Steve
