Full description

Scots Bonnet, Hand Knitted and Felted.

Worked in pure Shetland Wool in the colour of The Dunbonnet - hand knitted by me for Sam Heughans Character Jamie Fraser in Outlander!

The bonnet is in a shade of brown (dun coloured) with specs of other natural colours tunning through the length of the yarn giving it a 18th century homespun look.

It was a colour of camoflage to hide the Highlander from the prey he was hunting - or to hide the Highlander from the Redcoats who were hunting him!

In the 16th, 17th and 18th century, this colour is thought to have been obtained by experimenting with various plant leaves until the colour was achieved. The wool was left to dry then knitted and felted using the traditional methods of the time.

The Scots Bonnet seen in the Highlands in the 16th Century and endured through to 18th century until the battle of Culloden in April 1746 which effectively ended the Clan system

The bonnets were taken to America by those who emigrated after Culloden and is still popular at Scottish Events there

Knitted to fit:-

Head circumference 56-61cms

Outer circumference - Width 31cms - Length 28cms(12-11")

The bonnet is hand knitted in pure wool so hand wash only - it has already been felted by me!

Full laundry instructions are enclosed with the purchase

Although every effort has been made to ensure the colour in the photographs is accurate, colours can vary when posted on the internet.
