Hand turned from freshly cut sycamore, 'Gathered' is a one-of-a-kind vessel that celebrates the natural movement of timber. A striking bark inclusion and evolving grain make every angle of this sculptural piece unique.
I turned the vessel while the timber still contained its natural moisture. As it dried, the wood moved gently and developed its own distinctive shape. Rather than hiding those changes, I allowed them to become an important part of the design.
One feature immediately caught my attention. A natural bark inclusion sits just beneath the surface, revealing one of the many hidden layers within the tree.
When first completed the timber appeared almost plain. However, as the wood has continued to mature, the grain has become increasingly visible. As a result, the vessel continues to develop long after leaving the lathe.
Every piece of wood is different. For that reason, I embrace natural variation, movement and grain rather than trying to make every vessel identical.
