One of my new years resolutions this year is to read no dystopian fiction this year as the world is dystopian enough. So far I have managed it, but it appears I’m drawing them instead… I’m not sure that’s entirely what I had in mind!
When I showed this to my five year old, she said ‘Oh no daddy he’s digging up the train, stop him!’, but alas I couldn’t as this is a drawing, sorry Ida.
I’ve been working on this one for a while. During the making of it I picked up Covid-19, which took quite a while to properly shake off, but that might have been due to another bad thing happening which I won’t go into yet. Either way these two things may have either hindered or helped the final outcome (depending on your opinion of the drawing), but if you think this is the product of a deranged mind you probably haven’t seen anything yet…

Full description
This is the next of my mini British Transport Dystopias, this one focusing on British Pelican crossing control buttons (Pelican being derived from PELICON, a portmanteau of pedestrian light controlled). This was the first definitive light-controlled crossing for pedestrians, introduced in 1969, and they can also found in the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, Ireland, Indonesia and Australia. Everyone gets taught how to cross the road, and these controllers are one of my earliest memories. Even these days kids get excited about being able to press the button (well my daughter does).
Since 2016 they've been phased out sadly, and they aren't installed anymore. Now we have Puffin crossings, which are very similar, but not quite the same (the red and green signals are on the controller themselves, and the name means 'pedestrian user-friendly intelligent' which isn't quite as snappy to me). Oh and there's a spider on there, because thats what I do now!

- Printed with the Ultrachrome HDR archival ink system of the Epson 7890 LFP on Hahnemuehle Giclee German Etching Paper (Matt FineArt - textured paper, 310 gsm, 100% a-Cellulose, white, mould-made)
- Print ships rolled in a cardboard tube
- Frame is not included (just for illustration purposes)
