Full description

I work with photographic images in a few different ways. This piece is where I have enlarged a very small detail of a photograph I had taken of a small unused quarry in the Elan Valley, Wales. I find that working in this way reveals hidden qualities and atmospheres that evoke the spirit of a place much more than a literal depiction of a scene.

The form of this small oak tree reminded me of the works of the Romantic painters of the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as the well-known book illustrators of folk and fairy tales. That echo of other art forms and media is something I find enchanting, and aligns a thoroughly modern medium to its antecedents.

Often the enlargement of the photographic image pushes the resolution to its limits: again something that both identifies the unique features of a medium and highlights the visual choices the artist must make in the tension between representation v. abstraction.
