Souvenir Plate Discovered
Darlington
July 2026
Handcrafted into
Brooch August 2026
I love collecting ceramic, discarded, lost, damaged or just not wanted anymore. Mud-larking rivers and beaches, rummaging around recycling centres and charity shops. Keeping an eye out of any little piece, found by chance just because I happened to be there, a moment in time.
During a visit to Darlington, I found a slightly damaged 'Souvenir from Portugal' plate, oval, hand painted with thick glaze. I really like the stylised poppy flower and hoped to make earrings. However, the plate was made from lightweight chalk material and became too fragile for earrings.
Always thinking of new ideas and on the look out for anything that might usually be thrown out, I managed to purchase some wood blanks and pin clasps that were due to be recycled. These make excellent trays for delicate ceramics.
This brooch is created using 35mm wood dyed round with a recycled metal brooch clasp. The poppy like flower was part of the pattern on the flat surface of the plate and looks striking set into the dark wood tray. The glaze in glossy and in tact, catches the light, the pattern is slightly raised in places due to being hand painted.
The idea is to create something new from old, use recycled materials to produce unique eco gifts. The finished piece isn't meant to be perfect but instead retain part of the original character, including marks/scratches, all part of the history.
