I love collecting ceramic discarded, lost, forgotten, damaged or just not wanted any more. Favourite places are rivers and beaches, but also find great things at recycling centres and charity shops. I’m lucky to live near the River Tees, Co Durham and often walk the banks picking up broken glass, pottery anything that can be cleaned and re-worked and crafted into something new. Bits and bobs found by chance waiting to find new homes.

Ceramic Discovered

Garstang, Lancashire

July 2025

Handcrafted into

Brooch July 2026

I love collecting ceramic, discarded, lost, damaged or just not wanted anymore. Mud-larking rivers and beaches, rummaging around recycling centres and charity shops. Keeping an eye out of any little piece, found by chance just because I happened to be there, a moment in time.

I visited Garstang, Lancashire on a lovely July day. I found a pretty Crown Ducal Florentine plate. Raised fruit and flowers pattern made in the 1950's. One of the corners had broken off and badly glued, lots of the embossed pattern also damaged but still a wonderful find.

Eventually I risked clipping the rim to form random shards. I really love the tactile surface, with some parts more prominent, and the way the ceramic broke it created varied shapes.

Always thinking of new ideas and on the look out for anything that might usually be thrown out, I managed to purchase some wood blanks and pin clasps that were due to be recycled.

This brooch is created using 35mm dark wood dyed round with a recycled metal brooch clasp. The ceramic is the flat part of the plate in the middle, sadly it was quite scratched and cracked but I love the pattern so spent a long time gently smoothing and polishing by hand.

Eventually I managed to set the ceramic in the wood brooch tray but due to the age and condition of the plate the ceramic was in two pieces. Looking at the brooch you can see on the left hand side a crack and chip, tiny but it’s there. Firmly set onto the wood base the ceramic is secure but like it’s original state it’s flawed.

Personally I love this type of detail, part of the journey and life of a piece. Perfectly imperfect, recycled and unique.

The idea is to create something new from old, use recycled materials to produce unique gifts. The finished piece isn't meant to be perfect but instead retain part of the original character, including marks/scratches, all part of the history.
