Full description
In Victorian portraiture, female sitters were often framed by symbols that reinforced ideals of ornament and beauty. This hand embroidered artwork reclaims this tradition, encircling its subject with Alyssum, the flower which, in the language of flowers means 'worth beyond beauty'. The piece reframes this historical narrative to instead honour substance over surface value.
'Worth beyond beauty' is hand stitched onto vintage blue fabric and framed within a dark wood frame, ready to hang.
Framed, the piece measures 22cm x 27cm.
