In 2013 during the Year of Natural Scotland, Visit Scotland and NatureScot joined forces to celebrate some of Scotland's best loved wildlife - Scotland's Big 5. This collection is my tribute to these five majestic animals, all of which I have been lucky enough to see in the wild. Painted using watercolours with pencil details, these illustrations combine the unique features of the animals with elements of the landscape they live in.
The second largest bird of prey in the UK, it was an ancient belief that golden eagles were the only animal that could stare into the sun without going blind. Another popular myth is that when eagles were old they would fly towards the sun until their feathers caught fire and after plunging into the sea their youth would be renewed.
Golden eagles are Scotland's apex predator and are known to hunt mountain hares, rabbits and foxes.
