In 2013 during the Year of Natural Scotland, Visit Scotland and NatureScot joined forces to celebrate some of Scotland's best loved wildlife - Scotland's Big 5. This collection is my tribute to these five majestic animals, all of which I have been lucky enough to see in the wild. Painted using watercolours with pencil details, these illustrations combine the unique features of the animals with elements of the landscape they live in.
Red deer have been synonymous with Scotland for more than 1000 years and a hind's head is one of the most common carvings on Pictish stones. Stags are named based on the number of tines (points) on their antlers - with 10 tines, this stag is two short of being a Royal. In Medieval folklore, it was thought that deer meat was poisonous because they ate snakes (it's not and they don't).
As deer now have no natural predators in Scotland, humane culling is undertaken to prevent an unnaturally high population, which would cause irreparable damage to the native forests and fragile peatlands.
