In 2013 during the Year of Natural Scotland, Visit Scotland and NatureScot joined forces to celebrate some of Scotland's best loved wildlife - Scotland's Big 5. This collection is my tribute to these five majestic animals, all of which I have been lucky enough to see in the wild. Painted using watercolours with pencil details, these illustrations combine the unique features of the animals with elements of the landscape they live in.
The otter is one of the oldest inhabitants of Scotland, with evidence of remains found in Pliocene deposits from at least 2.5 million years ago. Otters were once hunted for their fur which is extremely dense and soft and was prized for protection from the cold Scottish winters.
Even though otters are known to inhabit every county in the UK, they are probably the most elusive of Scotland's Big 5 as they are shy, nocturnal and live in secret dens
