In 2013 during the Year of Natural Scotland, Visit Scotland and NatureScot joined forces to celebrate some of Scotland's best loved wildlife - Scotland's Big 5. This collection is my tribute to these five majestic animals, all of which I have been lucky enough to see in the wild. Painted using watercolours with pencil details, these illustrations combine the unique features of the animals with elements of the landscape they live in.
In folklore there is a widespread tradition that the drowned change into seals. In Shetland they are known as selkies who have the power to shapeshift and shed their seal skins, and if their skins are stolen they must remain in human form.
Despite also being called the Common Seal, Harbour Seals are not actually that common, with a UK population of around 33,000 to 36,000. Roughly 80% of those live in Scottish waters.
