Description

A totally unique item for the house - a footstool with a resident reclining rabbit - but he is willing to share! This is an old refurbished footstool that has been completed reupholstered by me with a wet-felted wool cover, needlefelted rabbit on a continuous piece of wire armature that is attached to the stool (no sharp wire ends) ... plus needlefelted carrots. This is a quirky sculpture - not intended to be used as a toy - but is perfectly functionable as a footstool. The stool is 40cm wide by 26cm high by 30cm deep - plus the hare, which is 26cm long and 14cm to top of ears.

I found this wonderful old footstool in Cerne Abbas and thought it would make a lovely project and visualised a rabbit reclining on it! The rabbit is positioned at the back so that it can still be used as a footstool - or a seat for a small child. I imagine my father would have loved to have had this as a footstool! The old and worn embroidered cover, horse hair stuffing and hundreds of metal tacks were removed, leaving just the beautiful wood frame. My friend Dottie then showed me how to reupholster the stool, adding webbing and more modern stuffing. I attached a wire armature to the frame for the rabbit - in such as way as there are no sharp ends, only loops. I then wet-felted wool in shades of green to make a fabric cover which I fixed to the stool, adding a crocheted chain as decoration. The rabbit was then needlefelted over the armature and also felted to the cover. Carrots were added on one corner as a final touch.
