I have drawn and painted for most of my life, selling my work from the very beginning. Now I live in the midst of the North Norfolk countryside, just a stone's throw from the coast near Overstrand. As you can see from my work, I am fascinated by the seashore as well as the woods and fields of the local area.
Looking back over my art journey, my style has grown and developed but several key features can be traced back to my earliest works. I moved from watercolour to gouache as I love the pigment-rich colours and the ability to lay a very flat, even colour block, something you cannot do with watercolours. I have retained the strong use of black in both line and block colour, something reflected in my earliest work and now a very prominent feature of my current portfolio.
What inspires me is light and texture, I tend not to use photographic reference, relying predominantly on memory and trace impressions left by a scene or a view. I may use them within days or it may take several months for them to surface again in my memory and manifest on paper.
My interests are very traditional countryside, I am fascinated by folklore, nature and the turn of the seasons. The road I live on used to be called Shuck's Lane and my nearest neighbour, about a quarter of a mile away, used to be an active smuggler's cottage. I guess the environment helps shape the outlook!
I have often been asked what I am trying to convey through my pictures, what is their meaning? The answer is simple, nothing. I don't want to tell the viewer anything at all. I simply hope that viewing one of my pictures may conjure up memories of good times, the happiness of maybe childhood or even before that. If someone looks at one of my pictures and a smile comes, or they feel a little lighter and less 'cluttered' in themselves, then I've done my job.
