What it is: A handmade Hawthorn wood kilt pin/lapel pin, shaped into a sleek, tactile surfboard design, a unique Scottish gift, from sustainable timber.

This contemporary pin is crafted from a unique piece of windfall hawthorn timber, gathered just 500 yards from my workshop by the riverside and stored for five years to fully dry. While it comes from the exact same bough as my hawthorn cufflinks, this specific section reveals a completely different character—featuring a striking, natural two-tone grain split down the center.

To finish, I hand-shape and hand-sand the piece through six progressive grits (80 to 800) until it is incredibly smooth to the touch. It is then finished with eight individual coats of tung oil applied slowly over several weeks. This patience allows each layer to fully cure, bringing out the wood's deep, natural warmth and providing a durable, plastic-free protective shine.

Because hawthorn grain varies immensely from inch to inch, this pin is a genuine one-of-a-kind piece that cannot be replicated. The wood displays its true organic colours and has not been dyed or stained.
