Full description
A keepsake or memento that can be easily gifted, hand-stamped with a quotation taken from Tudor history, this collaged card can be slipped into a favourite read as a bookmark, added to happy mail, or kept close as a 'prayer' card.
Each bookmark is individually hand-stamped onto warm yellow card, meaning no two are ever quite the same. Variations in spacing, pressure, and alignment are part of the process; the slight irregularities you see in the lettering are intentional and inherent to hand-stamping, capturing the rhythm and imprint of making by hand rather than machine.
The design features a small decorative motif, gold-toned detailing, and a border of glittering washi tape, all mounted onto a heritage-inspired floral backing and sealed through lamination for durability.
Inspired by Tudor material culture, places such as Hever Castle, and a continued fascination with women's words and histories, I made these for anyone, who, like me is drawn to Tudor history, tantalising literary fragments, and royal lives. Well-suited to readers, history enthusiasts, or those who feel a connection to figures such as Anne Boleyn, or interpretations of her story in works like Six the Musical.
Love tokens from Early Modern History took many different forms; they were used to wish love and luck into the future of a courting couple, and were imbued with emotion. This practice inspired me to take some time to create these bookmarks which carry a message from history, calling on the enigmatic Anne Boleyn, one of the most remarkable figures from women's history and the world she inhabited in Tudor England.
Two of Anne Boleyn's Books of Hours are on display at Hever Castle, which I had the pleasure of viewing while on honeymoon. Another Book of Hours is held in The British Library's collection, where a message inscribed by Anne Boleyn reads "By daily proof / you shall me find / To be to you both loving and kind". This remarkable notation is written in answer to King Henry VIII.
