This 4 colour linocut is based upon one of my drawings of Weir (or, originally, Wear) Mill, created before its recent conversion to apartments, retail outlets and eateries, as investment pours into Stockport Old Town, thanks to the efforts of creative people, independent businesses attracting footfall after years of neglect, then the council and entrepreneurs picking up the ball as well.
I fell in love with old Stockport town centre when it seemed to be dying - I thought its beautiful old Market buildings, the Underbanks, the fascinating alleyways, old steps from one level to another, the Hatworks, and of course the great Viaduct, etc, etc, deserved to be celebrated and valued as much as, for instance, York.
The mill lay derelict for decades and as much as I loved it in its intriguing, decaying state (& longed to explore inside), I'm glad it has been rescued from probable destruction by rot, rain or fire. It sits with its shoulder tucked under the magnificent and famous Viaduct.
