A copper bowl decorated with glass enamel, featuring scrolled patterns of blue, yellow-green, rose and black over a white background.
The bowl is 74mm in diameter and 20mm deep. You might use it as a dressing table tray or a table centrepiece. Among other uses, customers at fairs have suggested that my bowls may be just the thing to use to drop a tea bag on when you take it from your mug or cup or may make good soap dishes.
I made the pattern on the bowl by drawing a steel tip through the surface while the bowl was in the kiln at 700 degrees, but cooling as the kiln door was open. In this situation the colours cannot be distinguished and the enamel is solidifying around the steel point. At the end of the day I accept the design the process allows me.
The bowl is counter-enamelled speckled black on the reverse. The counter enamel balances the tensions to which the bowl is subject when each of the layers of enamel is fired at 700 degrees centigrade to fuse them as I build up the decorated surface. Where the counter enamel has fixed the bowl to the stilt that holds the it away from the floor of the kiln the glass has been stoned down to smooth it. This has exposed the copper base.
Your bowl will be sent by Royal Mail, tracked 48.
