I had the idea whilst working on a circular frame for a series of mats that I mentally labelled ‘Up Periscope’. I love the idea that a periscope could pop up out if any body of water, at any place in the world and take a snapshot of what it saw. The pieces in this series whilst not necessarily being true representations of a particular place are inspired by real life places and sometimes combinations of different places.

It is a dark night and the seas are high but our periscope spots a beacon of light in the distance, the warning of rocks nearby and to take care.
This colourful wall hanging is made from a a mixture of recycled and new wool fabric with a bit of Harris tweed thrown into the mix.
The wall hanging is created using a traditional rug making technique known as 'Hooky' in the North East of England. Strips of wool are 'hooked' through a hessian base to produce a vibrant and colourful piece. The hand whipped edge provides a neat and robust finish.
