This section of rail track was part of the Butterley Company rail network, near Ripley, Derbyshire. Lengths of track have been lying around the farm I grew up on for as long as I can remember, probably having been lifted when the area was opencast mined in the 1940's/50's.
Butterley Co. mined iron ore, coal and limestone, it is quite likely that these rails were all produced on site in their forge at Codnor Park to construct their private rail network.
I came up with the idea to preserve the rails from the scrap man and turn them into these clocks.
