About this item
At first glance there's nothing wrong with this little book, but if you look very closely, you will see a hairline crack running across the front cover, the result of an accidental scissor snip. This was my last piece of this particular designer paper, so I repaired the damage by patching it from the back, and now the book is nearly as good as new, and perfectly functional. To me, there's something appropriate about having a Tiny Book of Calm that's been through the wars a bit and has now been restored. A further glance might show that in fact the title of the book is very slightly askew. (Note that the other images show books that are whole and well and photographed in daylight - these have been included to show the menko gift pouch and an example of the pages). I am offering this once-damaged-but-now-healed book at half price. The book measures approximately 4 by 4cm, meaning you can carry it in a purse, wallet or pocket. It has five prompts to focus the mind when experiencing stress or anxiety, thus encouraging the brain to come out of 'panic' mode: What can you see? Name 5 things. What can you feel or touch? Name 4 things. What can you hear? Name 3 things. What can you smell? Name 2 things. What can you taste? Name 1 thing. The final page of the book is blank for you to add your own words or image, in order to personalise it. The pages for the book are folded from 2 rectangles of paper, and the cover uses designer paper sourced from Paper Tree Nook. Some glue is used to give the book durability. It comes in a traditional Japanese origami 'menko' or gift pouch. Instructions are included on how to reseal the pouch, once opened. The book and gift pouch are wrapped in tissue paper, sealed with a ribbon and shipped in a letterbox sized box within three days of ordering, using Royal Mail 2nd class post. Postage is free.

Many years ago, I was visiting a friend for the weekend when I had a panic attack. I recall her sitting next to me and asking me to name 5 things I could see, 4 things I could touch or feel, 3 things I could hear and so on. It was the first time I had heard this technique being used, and I was hugely grateful to her for being so level headed and supportive, and for holding the space for me while I slowly came back into my senses. Some years later, this same friend was having a hard time and struggling to cope. I wasn't able to go and visit her straight away, but I wanted her to know that she was in my thoughts. I'd been learning how to make origami books, and the idea came to me to put the prompts she'd used with me into a tiny book that she could carry around with her, so that if she started having overwhelming thoughts or feelings, she could take it out and read through the pages. This is how the first Tiny Book of Calm came about. I've since researched the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding activity and have found out that it is widely used in the NHS and other mental health service providers in the UK, and that it's in the common domain. I believe it was introduced by Betty Alice Erikson in the US in the 20th century. For me, folding origami models is a way of engaging with my senses that is both soothing and focusing. I hope that the recipient of the Tiny Book of Calm finds some of the calm and quiet that I did while making it.
