About this item
Mellifluous is a golden bee goddess born from my imagination, combining pop surrealism with my fascination for folklore, fantasy and extraordinary beings. Regal, statuesque and quietly commanding, she emerges from a richly textured world of gold and shadow. Her enormous, hypnotic eyes meet yours directly, while her elaborate hairstyle, striped with gold, echoes the body of a bee. Delicate golden wings extend from either side of her head, creating a silhouette that shifts between woman and insect. Honey appears to flow from her neck, as though she is made from the very substance she embodies. Her Greco-Roman-inspired styling gives her the presence of an ancient goddess, while her insect-like qualities lend her an otherworldly strangeness. The background is built from layers of gold, metallic tones and rich textures. Different colours and surfaces catch the light as it changes, making the painting particularly beautiful in warm morning sunlight. The darker, weathered edges frame her luminous face, giving her an almost devotional quality. For me, Mellifluous is a celebration of beauty, warmth, strangeness and quiet power. She is both human and bee, a fantastical spirit with a presence entirely her own.
