'Til Death - Original A4 Sapphic Dark Fantasy Celestial Skull Illusion Art

Two women stand close beneath a huge full moon, one human and one elven, their faces turned towards each other with a moth resting between them. A shared necklace loops around both their necks, binding the pair together in a marriage ceremony. But 'Til Death is designed to reward a second look. Step back, or let your eyes shift, and another image begins to emerge: the entire composition resolves into a skull. 'Til Death is an original sapphic dark fantasy artwork inspired by my love of modern fantasy fiction, memento mori and historic skull illusions. Its central visual idea draws on works including Charles Allan Gilbert's All Is Vanity (1892) and turn-of-the-20th-century optical-illusion imagery explored in Adele Nozedar's The Skull Sourcebook. MEANING & SYMBOLISM In my headcanon, these original characters embody the powers of day and night, united beneath the full moon. The title plays with the marriage vow "till death do us part", while the hidden skull turns that promise into a memento mori. Moths belong to both sides of their world: some species fly by day and others by night. Celestial imagery, dramatic 2010s grunge-inspired styling, jewel tones and my enduring love of bones and moths bring the older illusion tradition into my own fantasy universe. The surface is richly worked, particularly across the moon, with raised and bubbled textures that catch the light. Even the darkest areas are built from mixtures of colour rather than flat black, creating deep, shifting darks.
