About this item
Ceramic Discovered Garstang, Lancashire July 2025 Handcrafted into Brooch July 2026 I love collecting ceramic, discarded, lost, damaged or just not wanted anymore. Mud-larking rivers and beaches, rummaging around recycling centres and charity shops. I visited Garstang, Lancashire on a lovely July day and found a pretty Crown Ducal Florentine plate. Raised fruit and flowers pattern made in the 1950's. One of the corners had broken off and badly glued, lots of the embossed pattern also damaged but still a wonderful find. Eventually I risked clipping the rim to form random shards. I really love the tactile surface, with some parts more prominent, and the way the ceramic broke it created varied shapes. This brooch is created using a recycled dyed wood round, 35 mm, with a recycled metal brooch clasp. The ceramic is the flat part of the plate in the middle, sadly it was quite scratched and cracked but I love the pattern so spent a long time gently smoothing and polishing by hand. Due to the age and condition of the plate the ceramic round became two pieces. Looking at the brooch you can see on the left hand side a crack and chip, tiny but it's there. Firmly set onto the wood base the ceramic is secure but like it's original state it's flawed. Perfectly imperfect, recycled and unique. The idea is to create something new from old, use recycled materials to produce unique gifts. The finished piece isn't meant to be perfect but instead retain part of the original character, including marks/scratches, all part of the history. Delivered in gift box made from FSC®-certified cardboard and water-based glue. Presented on Jewellery box insert made from tall oil, a by-product of paper production. Complete with short bio and FSC®-certified gift bag. All materials used are from sustainable sources and can be recycled.

All ceramic personally collected from river banks, charity shops, recycle centres, beaches, wherever dropped, dumped or zdonated ceramics are found, cleaned and shaped into new stories. Each item comes with a short bio. Every piece is individual, nothing replicated, however, due to repetitive patterns in ceramics there will be some similarity but only through the ceramic material not in the final piece. Ceramic will show marks, scratches and imperfections, all part of its history and journey.

The idea is to create something new from old, found by chance, full of history and character. To present and deliver unique Eco Friendly gifts in Sustainable Packaging. I love collecting ceramic discarded, lost, forgotten, damaged or just not wanted any more. Favourite places are rivers and beaches, but also find great things at recycling centres and charity shops. I’m lucky to live near the River Tees, Co Durham and often walk the banks picking up broken glass, pottery anything that can be cleaned and re-worked and crafted into something new. Bits and bobs found by chance waiting to find new homes.
