I've created the background using a pretty collection of cotton floral fabrics in shades of pinks and greens, carefully cut and arranged to create a colourful mosaic effect. The mix of patterns gives the picture a lovely folk-art feel, with each little section adding its own splash of colour and character. At the centre is a sweet dark-red folk bird, with a layered fabric wing. I've used embroidery threads across his chest and tail to create feathering and stitch his tiny beak and legs. To tie the whole design together, I've added small leaves and flowers to some of the mosaic panels, echoing the shapes and colours found in the surrounding fabrics. The combination of patterned cottons, layered fabric and hand embroidery gives this little artwork a wonderfully tactile, handmade quality.
